This workshop
was designed in conjunction
with the Sixth International Symposium on Recent
Advances in Environmental Research to meet the needs
of environmental and biomedical scientists, researchers,
and policy makers who need information on health issues
related to exposure to environmental
substances-including those that are
naturally-occurring-and environmental agents known to
induce illnesses, including cancer and health
disparities. The National Library of Medicine (NLM)'s
environmental health and toxicology information
resources provide invaluable tools to address these
issues.
Sponsored by NLM's Division of
Specialized Information Services, and taught by
professionals from the Oak Ridge Institute for Science
and Education in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the workshop
includes both lectures and computer practice sessions.
Major emphasis will be placed on navigating through the
NLM's TOXNET(R)
(Toxicology Data Network) databases and related
resources. Class materials consist of a manual
containing copies of all overheads used in the course,
step-by-step instructions for accessing each database,
and handouts providing information and Internet
addresses for other quality Internet resources.
During this workshop, participants
will:
-
Learn
how to access the NLM's environmental health and
toxicology databases on the Internet
-
Learn how to find valuable
information on environmental contaminants
-
Explore
other environmental health information resources on
the Internet
Workshop will take place on Sunday
September 13th 2009 in Room 118
of the John A. Peoples Science Building on Jackson State
Campus. Time: 12:30pm - 4:30pm. Lunch boxes will
be provided.
