Program Summary

The objective of this project is to establish a high school pipeline program, Careers in Aquatic, Fisheries and Atmospheric Sciences (CAFAS) to recruit, train and mentor students to pursue careers, advanced degrees or environmental entrepreneurial opportunities in the sciences directly related to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s mission.

The program is a partnership between Jackson State University, NOAA National Marine and Fisheries Sciences (NMFS) Pascagoula Laboratory, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR), and High Schools in Jackson and surrounding areas in Mississippi. The Program also serves as a means for recruiting high school students, particularly underrepresented minorities into marine, environmental and meteorology undergraduate programs at Jackson State University and other institutions of higher learning.

The program further strengthens collaborations between Jackson State University, participating high schools, NOAA and MDMR, in research and education of students.
